A six-time ASCAP Award winner, Mark Shapiro is Music Director of The Prince Edward Island Symphony, Cantori New York, and The Cecilia Chorus and Orchestra of New York, which performs twice annually in Carnegie Hall. He has conducted operas with Juilliard Vocal Arts as well as American Opera Projects and others. The New York Times has called his conducting “insightful” and the New Jersey Star-Ledger has termed his leadership “erudite and far-reaching.”
Shapiro has appeared on WNYC, WQXR and Sirius, and on PBS for a Ric Burns documentary. He has recorded with Albany, Arsis, Newport Classics (Opera News Editor’s Choice) and PGM. His CD of music by Philip Glass will be out in 2020.
Shapiro teaches at Juilliard (Evening Division), Mannes and Teachers College, and serves each summer as Director of Conducting at the European American Musical Alliance in Paris. He has taught for the Metropolitan Opera Lindemann Young Artists Program and was a guest conductor/lecturer at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Shapiro is represented by Athlone Artists.
