Violinist Heemin Choi is a student of Professor Philippe Djokic at Dalhousie University. He began violin studies at the age of 6 with Mrs. Myonghae Yoon and has been awarded numerous prizes and distinctions across Canada since. Heemin became the youngest scholarship recipient of the Nova Scotia Talent Trust in its 60 year history in 2005 and was the winner of the Canadian Music Competition in 2004. He also served as the Concertmaster for the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra throughout 20072010, appeared as guest Concertmaster for Nova Sinfonia, and is currently the Concertmaster of both the Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra and the Dalhousie Chamber Orchestra. Heemin has won prizes in the National Music Festival and was awarded the String Music Atlantic Rose Bowl for two consecutive years (2010/2011). In his first year at Dalhousie, Heemin was the recipient of the Hnatyshyn developing artist grant, awarded only to the top undergraduate students in Canada. In 2012, he performed concerts throughout the Maritime Provinces as the winner of the Atlantic Young Artist Competition. Heemin performed as a soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia in 2010 for the pre-season launch tour, Nova Sinfonia, Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra, and the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra. He also frequently performs as part of the Music Room Chamber Players series and performed with Symphony Nova Scotia as the apprentice for the 20132014 season. In 2014, Heemin was the soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia for their joint concert with the NYSO, performing the Wieniawski Violin Concerto no.2. Heemin will be attending the Shepherd School at Rice University for his masters degree with a full scholarship through 20152017.
